1000 Guineas History

1000 Guineas history goes back to 28 April 1814, when the first race was run at Newmarket. After the 2000 Guineas, the 1000 Guineas is the second earliest of the five British Classic races, which also include the Epsom Oaks, Epsom Derby and St. Leger Stakes races.

The 1000 Guineas takes its name from the original prize fund offered for the race – a hefty purse for the early 1800s, with one guinea equivalent to about £1.05.

Today, the total purse for the 1000 Guineas is a substantial £350,000. With greater equality between the genders, the 1000 Guineas and 2000 Guineas races now have equal prize funds.
