Newmarket Racecourse features two courses – the July Course and the NatWest Rowley Mile Course. The Rowley Mile has been home to the 1000 Guineas since it was first run in 1814.

Newmarket racing history spans all the way back to the early 1600s, making the racecourse one of the oldest known sites for horse racing that’s still in use. The town of Newmarket itself dates back to 1200 and has a history inextricably tied to horse racing. In the 1700s, King Charles II watched the races at Newmarket from the now-famous “Bushes”, still on the Rowley Mile Course today about a furlong-and-a-half from the winning post.

Newmarket Racecourse now boasts world-class facilities and three main enclosures.

Newmarket Racecourse Enclosures

Premier Enclosure
The Premier Enclosure provides the best views of the winning post, as well as access to the Grandstand and the other two enclosures. Annual badge holders, as well as race goers who buy Premier Enclosure badges, have access to this enclosure. A strict formal dress code is enforced.

Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure
In 2000, the Queen officially opened the Millennium Grandstand. This and the Paddock Enclosure provide good views of the Rowley Mile Course, the parade ring and the winners’ circle, as well as access to the Garden Enclosure. A smart to casual dress code is encouraged.

Rowley Enclosure
The Rowley Enclosure provides views of the Rowley Mile but not of the winning post or the parade ring. Stands in the enclosure are temporary. The Rowley Enclosure includes tote betting outlets, mobile catering units and a playground for children. No dress code is enforced.

Bookmakers at Newmarket Racecourse are situated in both the Paddock and Rowley enclosures. In 2007, a £10-million redevelopment project set to provide improved facilities in the Premier and Grandstand & Paddock Enclosures was initiated.
