Newmarket Racecourse, host to the 1000 Guineas, is on the outskirts of the town of Newmarket, on the border between Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. The racecourse is about 12 miles from Cambridge and 60 miles from London.

A coach service runs between the Palmers Department Store in Newmarket town centre and Newmarket Racecourse, picking up passengers at the Rookery Shopping Centre and at Newmarket Railway Station on the way. The first coach leaves about two hours before the first race, and return coaches run from about 45 minutes before the last race on each racing day.

1000 Guineas Travel Directions

By Road

The A11 and A14 provide easy access from the major cities of East Anglia and from the M11 and A1 / M1 respectively.

By Rail

Regular commuter services run from London Kings Cross and Liverpool Street to Cambridge, Stansted Airport and Ipswich, where onward connections by rail or road can be made to Newmarket. For train times, you can phone the National Rail Enquiry line on 08457 484950.

Newmarket Racecourse provides a coach service from Cambridge Station to the course.

By Air

Stansted Airport is about a 35-minute drive from the racecourse, via the M11 and A11. A subsidised coach service runs direct between the airport and the course on feature race days, and via Cambridge on other days.

Guineas 1000 Travel & Ticket Packages

To make Guineas 1000 travel easier, Newmarket Racecourse and the railways are offering travel and ticket packages, including either:

  • standard class travel and entry to the Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure
  • first class travel and entry to the Premier Enclosure

The packages apply for travel from any of five railway stations – Bishops Stortford, Harlow Town, Liverpool Street, Stratford or Tottenham Hale – to Stansted Airport, from where a coach runs to Newmarket Racecourse.

For more information about ticket options, visit the Guineas 1000 tickets page.

Start picking your favourites for the 1000 Guineas on 4 May, when the Rowley Mile Course will play host to the 2008 Stan James Guineas Festival.
